Flying Women

dir. by Gabriela Jung, Brazil
runtime: 6 min
Video dance that addresses the construction of the image of women - already presented as a bad and weak element of society in the representation of Eva and instituted as a bad witch during the Middle Ages. It presents elements that permeate the popular perception of the witch and translates them to the current socio-political scenario in Brazil, seeking to blur the boundaries between the imaginary and the everyday, creating a fabled body based on symbolisms that continue to affect the direction of history.

Both archaeological and historical evidence suggest that just as the Caiquetíos were approaching the pinnacle of their cultural development, their way of life was disrupted by the arrival of the Spaniards, who destroyed their culture on Aruba, which culminated ultimately in 1515 with the killing and/or deportation to Hispaniola of the aboriginal Caiquetíos of the island. This act of cultural genocide marks the unfortunate end of the Ceramic Period on Aruba. - (Book by"The Archeology of Aruba: The Marine Shell Heritage")
I Was a Free Dog Poster

I Was A Free Dog

dir. by Yuula Benivolski, Canada Mexico
runtime: 12 min

As children we grew up in a war zone and our life was punctuated by air raid sirens and bomb shelters. The ocean nearby was a source of constant comfort. We used to swim in it daily. We used the big salty water to geographically orient ourselves in the world. Then our family immigrated to Canada, with its massive lakes and ravine systems, and we had to find different ways of understanding the space around us.

Swimming together 20 years later my sister and I were quite a bit older, more cautious and scared. The surreal experience of swimming in an ocean together was tinged with nostalgia but also solidified the internal confusion and disconnect one feels between "here" and "there" when torn away from their home.
***

Two sisters see each other on an ocean beach for the first time since childhood. Sound recordings from the sisters’ home country accompany this landscape: an orchestra of air raid sirens, ocean waves and tropical birds, all indicate that we are within multiple realities. These recordings create impossible spaces that exist simultaneously and imitate the psychic effects of a diasporic existence.

Smoke Poster

Smoke

dir. by Daniela Lucato, Italy Germany
runtime: 2 min
Smoke is a reflection during COVID about our concept of space.
How do we feel it when we are forced to use space in a different way?
How are our feelings changing, the way we also perceive time in the same space?
I titled this work Smoke because it is the image that comes to my mind when I think about this moment: symbolically it represents the unclear way we look now at the world, it is a temporary vision but it changes the way we perceive everything.
Which kind of projections do we have about us in relation to our environment: are our longings changing? Or are we the same people with a different consciousness?
Who are we in this new constellation?

The Blind Writer Poster

The Blind Writer

dir. by Georges Sifianos, France Greece
runtime: 10 min
The drawings of this film were made blindfolded, that is, without looking at them while drawing but using only tactile cues. This constraint deconstructs the individual drawings, which are then assembled into a whole in the viewer's mind. The film gropes along like a blind man. This reflects the writer’s perplexity, who questions dogmas and certainties. Faced with the complexity of the world, eternal questions concerning the relationships among people, political and metaphysical questions arise:
- Who created the universe?
- God.
- And who created God?
Faced with ready-made ideological answers, the writer admits his helplessness, his blindness is more metaphorical than real. What does “see” mean? Does what we see, the appearance, reflect reality? The viewer is called to provide his/her own answer. S/he is the one who will have to decide, as his perception does, by assembling the disparate lines of the drawings in order to make them meaningful.
In a world where communication has acquired special significance, where images and views are constructed on order, how can one discern what is substantial?
Is the candy edible or its colorful wrapping? The orange or its peel?
Paradoxically, the answer is not as simple as it appears.
